Chatelaine is French for lady of the castle. Ribbon chatelaines are the quieter, budget-friendly cousins of the more popular metal Victorian chatelaines. The word came into use in the 1830’s to describe this waist-worn Swiss army knife, but it was used for centuries before and had many other names.
It is popularly known to hold the mistress’s keys or sewing implements. But, it was also used to hold a myriad of other items: non-sewing tools, gloves, handkerchiefs, small purses, pencils, magnifiers, whatever the person wanted to keep handy throughout the day.
In this class, we will make a ribbon chatelaine with up to five ribbons to hold your implements. The top bow will attach to the waist by a pinback or waistband/belt hook.
Prerequisites: Hand-sewing skills.
Kit fee: $10
