Learn to make the iconic fashion accessory of the Renaissance: The Elizabethan Ruff. A deceptively simple piece of linen becomes a fashion marvel when combined with a little sewing and a dash of science. The class will begin with a lecture on the history, construction, and maintenance of both historically-accurate and modern interpretations, and finish with a hands-on workshop for students to create their own set of neck and wrist ruffs.
Kit fee: $50, pending cost of lace. Kit will contain linen strips that have been pre-gathered, prepared neck and wristband linen, and lace yardage to finish hems. Students should be able to complete or nearly complete both neck and wrist cuffs.
Supplies list:
- Hand-sewing kit: Fabric/thread scissors, needles, beeswax, thimble, pins, measuring tape, white sewing thread, white heavyweight eyelet thread, awl, thin braided cord or ribbon for ties.
- Sewing machine: Sewing machine with basic presser foot (not essential if you want to hand-finish your hems, but ruffs may not be fully completed in class due to time limitations)
