From its earliest beginnings, lace has held a place of distinction in the world of textiles, prized for both its beauty and the extraordinary skill required to create it.
This class traces the evolution of lace from its most labor-intensive hand techniques to the innovations of mechanization. Students will be introduced to the Lacis Museum of Lace & Textiles’ unique vocabulary for describing and discussing lace, building a foundation for identifying its origins and methods of manufacture.
We will begin with the two foundational techniques, hand bobbin lace and needle lace, before moving into a closer examination of bobbin lace derivatives and the developments that led to machine-made lace.
