General Workshop Description:
Tatting
is possibly the easiest lace making technique, but one of the most
difficult to learn from written instructions alone. We will discover
the key move that creates the basic stitch, thus bridging the gulf
between frustration and fascination with the tatting shuttle. Students
will learn the correct ways of loading the shuttle, holding and
manipulating shuttle and thread to make the basic stitch as well as
picots, chains, Josephine knots, and joins. We will also cover reading
charts and, if time permits, 2-shuttle tatting techniques. At the end
of the class you will have completed a simple but delicate motif
involving all these stitches.
Materials List:
1. A tatting shuttle at least 2.5” long, but not longer than
3.5”
2. One ball of crochet cotton #10 or perle cotton #5 in any light
color, or white
3. Small scissors
4. A crochet hook, US size 0 or 2
All materials are available in the Lacis museum shop.
Instructor:
Wendy Gilmore is a fiber artist who learned tatting when she was 9
years old. “When my grandmother passed away she gave her
tatting equipment box to my mother who, 15 years ago, passed it on to
me. My mother is still living, and she and I have shared many wonderful
hours knitting, spinning, crocheting and tatting. I am eager to pass on
this technique to any and all who are interested.”
