Note: To encourage practice between classes, work/study areas will be open the 2 hours between sessions and in the evenings.

BOBBIN LACE - Louise Colgan & Maria Provencher

Note: Those signing up for any of these classes will be provided with a specific list of materials and tools required when schedule is finalized.

LM - 1 : Beginning Bobbin Lace [2 Sessions]: With Maria. An introduction to the simplicity of this elegant textile technique. Learn the two motions and three basic stitches that form the basis of all bobbin lace through simple projects. Students should bring basic bobbin lace cookie pillow and bobbins, or purchase a basic bobbin lace kit ($36.00).  

LM - 2 : Schneeberg Lace [3 Sessions]: With Maria. Working with a few bobbins and colored threads, students will have a choice of designs as suited to skill level. All levels are welcome as long as you know the basic stitches. Among the skills covered in this class will be plaits, picots, false plaits, sewings, turning stitches, short rows, the six-pair edge, some fancy crossings, and bundle endings. A 18” minimum round pillow is recommended, along with at least 9 pairs of bobbins and DMC tatting thread in your choice of colors. 

LM - 3 : Contemporary Lace [3 Sessions]: With Maria. If you have basic bobbin lace experience (or have taken LM- 1) but would like to think outside the box, this class if for you. We will explore using the basic stitches and my twenty years of accumulated tricks to make unique pieces of lace. Starting with a selection of patterns each student will execute the design in their own unique way using color and various techniques. Student should bring DMC tatting thread or the equivalent and at least 15 pair of bobbins.

LM - 4 : Milanese Lace [4 Sessions]: With Louise. Students will work with few bobbins and colored threads to explore the rich tape lace tradition of Italy as suitable to traditional and contemporary expression. Basic knowledge of tape lace is required, with specific class projects determined by student skills. Student will need to bring 18” min diameter cookie pillow, bobbins, and basic basic supplies. An optional $12.00 material fee for students interested in pursuing a 3-D project using wire.

LM -5 : Hungarian Tape Lace [2 Sessions]: With Louise. Elaborate designs can be made with relatively few bobbins, using sewings to connect sections of tape, and plaited or braided fillings. This class requires knowledge of basic stitches as taught in Class LM -1, and will give students an opportunity to create a pleasing and unique designs while practicing key bobbin lace techniques. Student will need to bring 18” minimum diameter cookie pillow, bobbins, and basic basic supplies.


NEEDLE LACE / LACE ID - Nancy Evans

NE - 1: A Needle Lace Flower [3 Sessions]: Students will learn the basics of needle lace stitches and techniques by creating a three-dimensional flower and leaf. (Picture on website) This class is for beginning and intermediate students. The instructor will provide everything except scissors, which you should bring to class. Materials fee: $10.00.

NE - 2: Advanced Needle Lace [3 Sessions]: Additional stitches will be incorporated into a more complex flower. The instructor will provide everything except scissors, which you should bring to class. Materials fee: $10.00.

NE - 3: Point de Gaze [3 Sessions]: Introduced in the mid 19th century, this is the most delicate of all needle laces. This is a rare opportunity for advanced needleworkers to experience the magic of real lace, worked with the finest of threads. Materials Fee: $10.00.


NE - 4: History of Lace [2 Sessions]: Using samples from her own collection, lace expert Nancy Evans will give an overview of 500 years of lace in the context of the political, social and economic systems.


NE - 5: Lace Identification [3 Sessions]: Using samples from her own collection, lace expert Nancy Evans will tell the story of lace and teach the secrets of identifying the different types of lace. Students will be provided with charts, handouts, and white gloves. Bring a good magnifier to class with you.



KNITTED LACE - Galina Khmeleva

GK - 1: Fundamentals of Orenburg Knitted Lace [4 Sessions]: Designed to provide knitters who have basic knitting experience with an extensive overview of Russian lace knitting. Students will be introduced to the unique elements of lace knitting design, from pattern to borders to cornering techniques. The ten basic stitch patterns that provide the foundation of Russian lace knitting will serve as your guide, and you will learn cast-ons and bind-offs, superior shaping using a modified short-row method, a grafting technique that will ‘seam’ almost magical in its simplicity and versatility, and the tools necessary for achieving lace knitting bliss. As always, a class with Galina will provide an unforgettable cultural experience. Instructor will supply all necessary color charts and yarns for class. Students should bring their favorite needles (sizes 0 - 3) and note-taking materials. Materials fee: $20.00.

GK - 2: Heavy/Warm Shawl Workshop [4 Sessions]:  Knitters with basic knitting skills will learn to knit a heavy or warm shawl the unique Orenburg way. The construction of the classic warm shawl uses an entirely different knitting technique from that of the lighter, lacier ‘gossamer’ shawl taught in the previous class. This spectacular ‘cousin’ to the elegant traditional Orenburg gossamer lace shawl, made famous by Russian babushkas, will also make a superb throw, baby blanket, or comforter. As always, a class with Galina will provide an unforgettable cultural experience. Instructor will supply all necessary color charts and yarns for class. Students should bring their favorite needles (sizes 0 - 3) and note-taking materials. Materials fee: $15.00.

GK - 3: Dimensional Knitting [3 Sessions]: Would you like to give your knitting projects new life, adding style, substance, and texture? The addition of ‘spiders’, ‘bobbles’, ‘clover leaves’ and ‘mooshky’ (lilies of the valley) will add a new dimension to your knitting. Traditional they’re not - but definitely fun to knit! No materials fee - students should bring sport or fingering weight yarn and appropriate needles to class.


TATTING - Iris Niebach

IN -1: Beginning Tatting [2 sessions]:  For beginners, an introduction to shuttle tatting.

IN - 2: Tatted Butterfly [2 sessions]: Students must have prior knowledge of tatting technique or have taken class IN - 1.

IN - 3: Tatted Jewelry [2 sessions]: Make a tatted necklace in the spirit of the author’s book “Just for Fun: Tatted Jewelry.” Students must have prior knowledge of tatting technique or have taken class IN - 1.

IN - 4: A Tatted Ornament [3 sessions]: Good knowledge of tatting required. For intermediate and advanced students.

IN - 5: Tatting on Wire [2 sessions]: Create three-dimensional objects by tatting over fine wire. Students must have prior knowledge of tatting technique or have taken class IN - 1.
