The
Lacis
Museum Newsletter
September 22nd, 2009
Dear
Friends of LMLT,
As the warm days of summer finally arrive in the Bay Area we find
ourselves involved in the many fall local activities which included the
the Gatsby Event, a new Seelie and Unseelie Fairy Court
Gathering where all are encouraged to don angel wings, the coming
Renaissance Faire, and those looking forward to transportation back to
early 19th c. England at the Dicken’s Faire, supporting our
corset and bonnet classes.
The seeds of Bobbin Lace seem to have taken hold as the Bobbin Lace
Group was well attended this last Saturday, supported by Maria and
assisted by Beth from our staff. A preview of the Bobbin Lace
Exhibit was difficult to keep brief but much appreciated.

Exhibits |
A slide show on the Exhibit is now on the Museum web site and is only a
glimpse of this event. http://lacismuseum.org/exhibit/bobbin_lace/slideshow/
BOBBIN LACE, opens this Saturday with an opening reception on Friday
evening (Sept 25) from 6-9. A thank to Aidells
Sausage Co. for their contribution to the evenings refreshments.
In supporting the LMLT
pursuit of restoring the respect and admiration that was once
deservedly held by lace and to instill the magical spirit of this
fabric, and to give recognition to the souls that contributed to one of
the most remarkable achievements of his creative endeavors, this
Exhibit is offered to awaken the senses that have been obscured by a
world where technological achievement has become the measure of
man.
The many textures of bobbin lace are only part of the experience as the
presentation is designed to go beyond a casual observation with
magnifiers and a microscope available to take the visitor into an
unseen world.
The lace makers, not be taken for granted, are truly the focus of the
exhibit as they are seen over a 500 year span through over a hundred
paintings, photographs and the romantic imagery on the covers of the
popular needlework magazines.
A magnificent collection of ivory and gold leaf fans will take you to a
world of elegance and the extraordinary l8th c.lappets will take you to
worlds of Royalty. The treasured prickings, the patterns from
which the lace was made and the pillows and bobbins that create the
music of the lace maker, are designed to leave memories of humanity
imbedded into each fragment of this substance.
To offer further dimension and perspecive to this world an
identification panel has been incorporated relating actual specimens of
the many different laces and styles to a chronological chart. Plan many
visits and accept the concept that you have the inherent ability to be
part of this heritage.

MUSEUM

From a family dedicated to

accepted too).” Her class projects will

student might bring, “Snowflake” a simple project
worked with 8 bobbins, and “Caresse” a 3-D project.

| Closing
Thoughts |
With the opening of “Bobbin Lace” I hope
all will find a moment for a visit to LMLT and to transcend into a
distant world where the individual accepted survival as a personal
responsibility and in so doing achieved not only extraordinary heights
of achievement but pride in self.
