General Workshop Description:
Needle lace is worked in a nearly infinite variety of designs, in a great variety of stitches, but all of them are based on a simple buttonhole stitch. In this class you will learn the five basic steps to making needle lace: how to prepare the backing fabric, couch the outline thread, make decorative filling stitches, the cordonette or finishing stitches, and how to free the finished lace from the backing.
Students will create a needle lace sampler to learn some of the most beautiful lace stitches, such as corded Brussels, Point de Venise, Ardenza Point, Pea Stitch, Pyramid, Point d’Espagne, Cinq Point de Venise, four-hole Diamond, picot edging, and couronnes ring.

Materials List:
The instructor will provide materials for the first class session: handout, thread, needles, backing, and pattern. Students will select threads and materials to purchase and bring to the second class.

Materials to Bring to Class:
Fine scissors
Thimble
Crochet Hook, size 8 or 10
Notebook
Pen or pencil
For the second class session, students will bring their own threads to create a sampler of needle lace stitches.

All supplies are available in the museum shop.

Instructor:
Katrina Middleton is a lacemaker who learned to tat more than 20 years ago and became fascinated with all forms of lace, but it is needle lace that “takes her breath away.” Katrina has studied needle lace with Paula Harten of The Lace Museum in Sunnyvale, and Nancy Evans, needle lace editor for the IOLI Bulletin. She is an active member of the Sacramento area Gold Country Lacemakers Guild and hosts a needle lace group that meets monthly. She is also a member of IOLI and OIDFA.
