Lace

I was born in Nebraska and
moved to California during World War II. I majored in Music and art
history at San Francisco State and graduated from The Conservatory of
Music in San Francisco as a voice major.
Textiles were always a natural
part of my life and I learned to embroider, sew, knit, crochet, applique
and quilt from my family. I became interested in lace when weaving and
macrame were all the rage, in the early 60's. I moved to Washington
with my husband and two children in 1963. I read everything I could
find on lace and taught myself to make needle lace from a book. I met
Virginia Harvey, who was writing books on macrame, at The University of
Washington. She put me in touch with a study group in Tacoma, which I
joined. During this time I had two more children, did dressmaking in my
home for extra money and sold art pieces, to buy lace, of course!
Samples were what I could afford and that's what I bought. When my
children were grown I opened a lace and linen shop, which I had for 25
years.
I closed it two years ago and am just teaching and lecturing
now. I consult for a number of local museums and do some writing. I'm
continuing the study group, L.A.C.E. Lace Arts council for Education
and belong to I.O.L.I. I have twelve grandchildren and two great
grandchildren. I still love lace and love sharing with others.
