General Workshop Description:
Needlefelting is an engaging - even engrossing! - form of sculpture
that uses WOOL. If you can make a pecking motion with your hand and
wrist, you’re adept already, and this workshop will hat you
up in various ways of finagling and finessing this oh-so-approachable
medium. We’ll be making a low-relief wall (or garden fence)
plaque, and a freestanding cranium with highly defined features, for
installation at your whim.
Materials:
Materials to be provided by the instructor (cost to be included as part
of the class fee):
All wool fiber for construction and embellishment, a little pack with
felting needle, history and introductory instructions and some diagrams.
Materials
to bring from home:
1. a piece of soft foam or sponge, 3” thick, at least
6” x 6” (like a carwash sponge)
2. good scissors (a MUST!!)
All materials, and additional materials, can be purchased at the museum
shop.
Instructor:
Ayala
Talpai has spent her entire life making stuff, making do, and doing
well. This happy obsession with creativity led her to the first fiber
innovation in ages: felting needles that can turn wool into a
sculptural medium. She has taught woolwork to people of all ages and
abilities, all over the place, and has written two authoritative and
utterly charming workbooks on needle felting. You can make the
acquaintance of some of her creatures in the shop, and if you like
them, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to meet Ayala
herself in May. The class will be limited to 15 students, so if you are
interested, be sure to sign up soon!
