This
steadily growing group is geared to all levels of lace makers, who
gather, in the lace making tradition, with other lace makers in pursuit
of skills as well as camaraderie in this time honored lace technique.
Hosted by Maria Jose Munoz and Beth Lysten, all are welcome to learn,
share and encourage.
Bring your pillows), projects, queries and enthusiasm and share.
If
you are not a lace maker, you are still welcome to see what lace making
is all about and how it seduced virtually every level of society. It
takes little visual acuity, making it a means for relaxation for all
age levels.
If interest persists, you might consider signing up for one of Maria’s lasses.
Hosts:
Maria
Jose Munoz learned bobbin lace from her grandmother while growing up in
Columbia and later studied Textile Design at Los Andes University in
Bogota. While in Columbia, she has instructed and provided technical
and design assistance to groups of low-income women and offering bobbin
lace seminars to undergraduate students of textile design. She
currently teaches on going classes at LMLT.
Beth Lysten, a
member of the LMLT Staff was seduced into this craft while living in
Cape Town South Africa in 1992, when she stumbled into a small lace
museum where she put her hands on the bobbins of a demonstration
pillow. Soon an active member of the Cape Lace Guild, bobbin lace
became a second language, not just working the patterns of Torchon,
Milanese, Schneeburger and others but comfortable enough to express her
own designs within these disciplines. When asked why, she relates “my
fascination comes in learning an art form with great sensory input -
the feel..the sound..the visual delight of the interweaving threads and
the satisfaction..as you remove the last pin.
